Papers, 1777-1853 (bulk 1781-1836), primarily business-generated (relating to Merrick's commercial activities in London, Amsterdam, Charleston, S.C., and Concord, Mass.), but incl. personal material as well. Account books, 1783-1825; letter books (copies of letters sent and received, many relating to collection on accounts), 1781-1826; correspondence, 1779-1853; bills, accounts, receipts, 1777-1837; shipping trade records (incl. bills of lading), 1781-1787; Union Turnpike Corporation materials (stock certificates, receipts for assessments on shares, etc.), 1805-1814. (Cont.) and papers relating to plans for the Middlesex Female Academy, 1806-1820. Charleston, S.C., business papers reflect Merrick's partnership in firm Merrick & Course and his later dealings on his own, after dissolution of partnership. Some of the correspondence--for example, that with Tilly's brother Augustus--relates to both personal and business matters. Some of the bills, receipts, etc., are for personal and household purchases rather than business.

Tilly Merrick, storekeeper of Concord, Mass., was Treasurer of the Union Turnpike Corporation. He owned Union Turnpike shares No. 206-215. The Corporation was formed in 1804 to build a turnpike (a predecessor of Route 2) from Concord to Leominster, connecting the Cambridge and Concord Turnpike and the Fifth Massachusetts Turnpike.
